Book Synopsis

Półcienie is a novel about youth, freedom, displacement, and the search for identity. Its protagonist, Matylda, is a young woman from a Polish village who leaves home after high school and travels to Paris in the hope of building a better life.

With little money and no connections, she navigates the uncertainties of life abroad, takes odd jobs, stays with strangers, and encounters people from different backgrounds — emigrants, students, artists, and dreamers. Among them are Stavros, a Greek emigrant; Sylvie, a waitress; and Nicola and Pierre, whose worlds introduce Matylda to new ideas, artistic circles, and unconventional ways of living.

Paris becomes more than a city of dreams. It is a place of chance encounters, unexpected friendships, uncertainty, loneliness, and self-discovery. Moving between different worlds, Matylda must confront the distance between her expectations and reality, and discover what freedom really means.

Półcienie is a story about people who live between places, languages, and identities. It explores the fragile boundary between belonging and alienation, independence and insecurity, light and shadow. At its heart lies a universal question: can we truly begin again somewhere else without first discovering who we are?
